So, you are thinking of running a BOF session at LUGRadio Live, but want to find out more about it. This page offers some advice and tips about doing this.

BOF sessions are informal discussions about a particular topic. Instead of everyone sitting and listening to one person perform a presentation, BOF sessions are instead run by a single person but intended to be discussions that anyone can join in. This makes them ideal for gathering like-minded people to talk about different topics and share ideas and knowledge. This is where BOFs are different to talks - BOFs are intended for those involved to have a loose and general chat and share knowledge and ideas with each other.

Although BOFs are general discussions, each BOF needs someone to run it and define which topics are covered in the discussion and keep everything on track and avoid off-topic rambling. Each BOF session is 1 hour long and you naturally want to get the most out of that time and make sure everyone gets a chance to have a say.

Organising your BOF

So, you decide that you want to run a BOF session, but exactly how do you do it? Just follow the following steps:

  • First, get an idea of what you want to talk about. For ideas of the kind of BOFs at LUGRadio Live 2007, see the BOF Sessions page.
  • With an idea for a session, write up a small blurb describing the BOF and what you want to talk about and add it to the BOFs Wiki page and email us at IMPORTANT: In the email to, tell us which day (Sat or Sun) and what approx time you want to run the BOF session.
  • Now you need to spread the word about it. First post a message to the LUGRadio Live forum advertising your BOF and it is also recommend you post the BOF details on relevant sites. So, as an example, if you are running a BOF about KDE, post it on KDE news sites, websites, blogs, mention it in IRC channels and more.

Soon your BOF session will added to the official BOF Sessions page and you are done. Over the coming weeks your BOF session time will then be confirmed.

Running BOFs is a great way of pulling together people of similar interests and a great way of encourage new people to those interests. We really want them to be an integral part of LUGRadio Live 2007 and look forward to seeing your BOF ideas and sessions! :)
